We were joined by both Infinite and Soulati in this episode. Both are long time collaborators and members of Felonious, bay area’s live hip-hop music and theater collective. Infinite has called into our show in the past, but this was our first opportunity to connect face to face with him and close friend and band mate Soulati. Both perform as emcees within Felonious in addition to being the two beat boxers within the group. While Felonious, as a group, has stopped performing live as often as they once did, Infinite and Soulati continue to create their own music and art; often working with each other still. After Rock the Bells cancelled on me, my hip hop buddy Brian and I had to make the most of a trip out to New York. Closest show we found that caught our interest was a rave event with RJD2 and Zeds Dead. I’m very selective with my electronic music and have a few DJs and producers that I enjoy and would want to see live. RJD2 is one of those DJs who rides the fence well and is able to bridge the gap between so many genres of music including hip hop, dance, jazz, soul and so many others. He’s one of only a few pioneers in the music industry. It was so much fun and a real pleasure to finally see him perform live. He rocked that shit with 4 turntable decks and a live drummer!
Zeds Dead headlined. They were cool and had the crowd dancing and jumping, but in my eyes did not compare to the work and performance that RJD2 put in.
In addition to the concert we had a kick ass trip. I went to a real NY comedy show, Central Park, and had THE Pastrami at Katz’s Deli, ran into a bay area comic buddy out on Long Island and went to Coney Island and had a Nathan’s Famous dog. Most importantly I got to spend some time with my east coast family who I rarely get to see, but love and enjoy every moment with them. I wish we all could see each other more often, and I look forward to seeing some that I missed on my next trip someday.
We were fortunate enough to connect with Sake One this episode. Sake is an old friend of the show; he called into our Blogtalk show, while out in Cleveland, years ago, and we were lucky enough to get a few minutes with him during Hiero Day, but this is the first time we’ve been able to sit down and go deep in conversation with him.
Known to us as one of the most respected and established DJs working in SF and the bay area, Sake is also very passionate about his city and the people that call it their home. As Facebook followers, we were aware of his consistent outspokenness towards social injustices, police brutality and equality, but really learned how and where that mind thought came to be. We were pleased to learn just how much time and energy Sake has spent volunteering and working for several community Continue reading
SPENTRadio took a trip out to beautiful Oakland, CA to celebrate the 20 year legacy of the Hieroglyphics out at Hiero Day. Hieroglyphics Imperium teamed up with Oakland-based Linden Street Brewery to present the Second Annual Hiero Day block party on Monday, September 2, 2013. ‘Hiero Day, the free all day music festival that featured live performances by the legendary Hieroglyphics and other special guests, local merchandise vendors, food trucks, and interactive activities for all ages. Hiero Day celebrated and showcased the Bay Area’s diverse, innovative, multicultural, and multigenerational music movement in the heart of Oakland. Continue reading
Deuce Eclipse came out to the SPENT compound to “get down” with us. BNos first saw Eclipse perform along Zion-I years ago and has followed his artistic career since. As with several of our guests so far we knew him from seeing and chatting briefly at shows and events, but we wanted to get to know him better as he’s got a great story of his own. Continue reading
Our entire SPENTRadio crew, JD, BNos and BVanek were back in the studio together for the first time in a few shows. We were also joined by bay area hip hop artist Lateef the Truthspeaker (@TruthspeakerHQ). Like many of our recent guests we are fans of their work and their art, and jumped at the opportunity to get to know them a little more, along with our listeners, while sharing their stories with the world. Lateef is definitely one of those artists that we always wanted to learn a little more about.
JD and Lateef start the show with some sports talk, more specifically our Golden State Warriors and the NBA Playoff picture, NFL Draft, our “beloved” Oakland Raiders, the “coach killer” Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers. We know it’s been a while since JD has gotten in some quality sports talk on the show, and Lateef was able to keep up with the quick wit and knowledge and perspective of his own to offer. “B Squared” returned to the Hieroglyphics HQ building in Oakland, CA to have a conversation with Phesto from Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics. As long time HIERO fans, an ongoing talking point amongst JD and BNosanchuk was the mystery surrounding Phesto D. We were very interested in finding out more about the Souls of Mischief member. This week on the DJ podcast, I mean SPENTRadio we are joined by DJ D Sharp. He’s currently the Official DJ Golden State Warriors, but his story is much more than just that. D Sharp takes us through his Oakland roots and how he started to meet other people making music. He’s shared a great story about Souls of Mischief and prepping for their first tour. D Sharp is continuing to build his reputation as an A-list DJ, meaning that in the not-so-distant future, D Sharp hopes to join the ranks of fellow letter + noun DJs like A-Trak and Z-Trip in the upper echelons of DJ society.
